Vienna Central Cemetery Gets Digital Guide in 20 Languages

Vienna Cemeteries is expanding its offering at the Central Cemetery with a new mobile phone guide.

With the "Friedhof to go" ("Cemetery to Go") app, visitors can easily explore the grounds using their smartphones.

The guide offers tours in 20 languages, audio content, navigation and various themed tours.

Vienna Central Cemetery, with more than 330,000 gravesites, including around 1,000 graves of prominent figures, is one of the most significant cemeteries in Europe.

It covers around 2.4 square kilometers and represents a unique reflection of Vienna's cultural and urban history, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors from Austria and abroad every year.

To make the numerous graves of distinguished citizens more accessible to visitors, Vienna Cemeteries already publishes special guides about them.

Thanks to the new digital guide, this content is now also available in digital form.

- The smartphone guide for Vienna Central Cemetery demonstrates how we use innovative technologies to preserve cultural heritage while simultaneously creating new ways to explore it. In this way, we are making one of Europe's most important places of remembrance even more accessible and engaging for both Viennese residents and international visitors - said Monika Unterholzner of Vienna's municipal utility company Wiener Stadtwerke.

After scanning a QR code, the audio guide launches immediately on the mobile phone. Visitors receive information about the graves of prominent figures, can choose between themed tours lasting from 30 to 120 minutes, and are guided through the complex by a digital map.

A chat feature is also available, allowing users to ask questions about gravesites, history and points of interest.

The offering will be continuously developed based on visitor feedback, with new themed tours to be introduced in the future.

"Friedhof to Go" is available in 20 languages. Access costs EUR 8.40, and the guide remains available for 24 hours from the moment of activation.

It can be purchased via the website (Wiener Zentralfriedhof - Friedhofe Wien), through the Vienna Cemeteries online store, at the Gate 2 entrance, or by scanning QR codes placed throughout the cemetery.
