Norway plans to build the world's first ship tunnel, which will connect two fjord regions in the west of the country.

Construction of the 1.7-kilometer-long tunnel will begin as early as 2027, and it is estimated to cost around EUR 900 million.

The ship tunnel will cut through the rock of the Stad peninsula at its narrowest point.

Moldefjorden would be connected with the Vanylvsfjorden side, all located on Norway's west coast.

The tunnel is 36 meters wide, 50 meters high from floor to ceiling and 33 meters high. It is assumed that even some cruise ships could pass through it.

The construction is an exceptional project in terms of scale. Approximately three million cubic meters of solid rock will be excavated to make room for the tunnel.

Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2027 and is estimated to take approximately five years.

Once finally completed, the tunnel is planned to be free of charge. Commercial traffic, particularly cruise ships, will have priority when passing through the tunnel.

The intention is to assign transit times to ships in the same way that departure slots are assigned to aircraft.

It is estimated that the journey through the tunnel itself will take around ten minutes.

The cost of the tunnel will significantly exceed its economic benefits. The estimated price has risen to NOK 10 billion, or approximately EUR 900 million. Norwegian company AF Gruppen will be responsible for the construction project.
