Venous stent implanted in the brain for the first time in Serbia, at the UKCS Neurosurgery Clinic

An endovascular implantation of an intracranial venous stent, a minimally invasive procedure intended for patients with intracranial hypertension, has been performed for the first time at the University Clinical Center of Serbia (UKCS).

Minimally invasive procedure

At the Neurosurgery Clinic, within the Neuroradiology Department of the Center for Radiology of the University Clinical Center of Serbia, an endovascular implantation of an intracranial venous stent was performed for the first time in Serbia on July 16 in a patient with significant stenosis (narrowing) of a cerebral venous sinus.

This minimally invasive procedure is indicated for patients with (idiopathic) intracranial hypertension accompanied by chronic headaches and/or visual impairment caused by swelling of the optic nerves, according to the UKCS website.

The procedure was performed by interventional neuroradiologist Dr. Ivan Vukasinovic and his team, in cooperation with Dr. Ida van den Wijngaard from Leiden University, who is also a consultant at the University Clinical Center of Serbia.

The procedure was performed on a young patient from the Department of Cerebrovascular Diseases and Headaches (Department II) of the Neurology Clinic of the University Clinical Center of Serbia, who suffered from chronic treatment-resistant headaches and intracranial hypertension that could not be adequately controlled with maximum doses of appropriate medication.

Stent regulated venous pressure

By placing a stent at the site of significant stenosis of the cerebral venous sinus, the previously markedly elevated intracranial venous pressure, which had been the cause of the patient's chronic symptoms, was successfully regulated.

Immediately after waking from general anesthesia, the patient had no complications and reported a significant reduction in headache intensity. The patient was discharged for home recovery the day after the successful procedure.

With the introduction of this new minimally invasive procedure into everyday clinical practice at the University Clinical Center of Serbia, all conditions have been established for the most advanced and effective treatment of patients with this specific, but not particularly rare, neurological condition.
