Fuel excise duty increases again – About 5.5% higher from Monday

At its session on Thursday, June 25, the Serbian government decided to increase fuel excise duty again - by about 5.5% compared to this week’s amounts. The implementation begins on Monday and is limited to one week.

Through the new Decision on the temporary reduction of excise duty on petroleum derivatives, this levy has been raised compared to the previous amounts, so that the excise duty on leaded gasoline will be 72.72 dinars, on unleaded gasoline 68.4 dinars, and on diesel (gas oil) 70.34 dinars.

This is a difference of about 5.5% compared to the current excise duty amounts.

As a reminder, according to the current decision, as of Sunday, June 28, the excise duty on leaded gasoline is 68.9 dinars, on unleaded gasoline 64.8 dinars, and on diesel 66.64 dinars.

The new excise duty amounts will be applied starting from June 29, ending on July 5, 2026.

With this increase in excise duty on fuel (through “reduction of reduction”), the amounts are approaching the values prescribed by the Law on Excise Duties.

As a reminder, the law stipulates that excise duty is charged on leaded gasoline in the amount of 76.55 dinars per liter, on unleaded gasoline 72 dinars, and on diesel 74.04 dinars per liter.

Fuel prices still limited

Earlier this week, the Secretary General of the Association of Oil Companies of Serbia, Tomislav Micovic, told RTS that he would launch an initiative to repeal the Regulation on the Limitation of Prices of Petroleum Derivatives and provide arguments for the position that it was no longer necessary to regulate fuel prices in Serbia.

Namely, the Regulation on the Limitation of Prices of Petroleum Derivatives has been extended for 60 days.

Micovic stated that oil companies had a problem with long-term planning and investment due to price restrictions, but also that they hoped that the 60-day period, which the Government had set, was actually a hint that the market should be freed up.

– This is the fifth year that the Government has regulated prices and during those periods there were really serious periods where it was completely correct and acceptable for everyone, both for consumers and for the oil sector. But whenever there are these sudden changes, you cannot do it through administrative means, even if you have the best intentions, you cannot reflect market movements, it is simply impossible – he said.
