Tender for reconstruction of Kalenic market announced after years of announcements – Value of works EUR 20.1 million

After several years of announcements, the City of Belgrade has announced a tender for the reconstruction of the Kalenic market, which includes covering the market and adding shops. The estimated value of this work is 2.36 billion dinars excluding VAT, or about EUR 20.1 million.

The procurement was announced by the Secretariat for Investments of the City of Belgrade, and the deadline for submitting bids is June 30. For more information about the tender, see HERE.

The reconstruction of one of Belgrade’s most famous markets was announced back in 2019, when the City of Belgrade organized a public presentation of the urban planning project that envisaged covering part of the market and building new shops between Maksima Gorkog and Njegoseva streets. At that time, it was announced that the works would begin in 2020 and that the Kalenic market would get a completely new look.

The new deadlines were mentioned again in mid-2024, when the city secretary for investments, Luka Petrovic, stated that the reconstruction and modernization of the market should begin at the beginning of the next year (2025).

As announced at the time, the project will be implemented through several units. The first includes the largest part of the market with 510 stalls and four smaller squares with fountains and benches, which will be covered by a large canopy. The second unit refers to gastronomic facilities intended for the sale of food products and food preparation.

The third phase envisages the construction of a new dairy hall on the corner of Njegoseva and Maksima Gorkog streets. This facility will have about 50 sales points specialized in the sale of dairy products. The fourth unit will consist of the development of the Soja Jovanovic plaza, with stands that will also represent the access staircase to the dairy hall.

The Kalenic market was built in 1926 and is named after the Serbian merchant Aleksandar Kalenic. It covers an area of about 10,000 square meters and has been renovated several times over the past decades.

Meanwhile, the Center for Local Self-Government announced at the end of 2025 that the expansion of the Kalenic market was among the largest capital projects planned in the Belgrade budget for 2026. According to this data, a total of about 3.8 billion dinars has been planned for the project, while an investment of about 1.17 billion dinars is planned for the current year alone.
