Logistics in 2026: AI takes over decision-making, while digitization becomes a legal obligation

The year 2026 marks a milestone in global logistics, where technologies that until recently were in the testing phase become standard in everyday business. Artificial intelligence, warehouse automation and stricter European regulations are changing the way supply chains operate around the world.

According to industry analysis, the logistics sector is entering a phase in which it is no longer just about efficient transport of goods, but about a fully integrated digital system that manages the flow of information, inventory and deliveries in real time.

Agent AI takes over key decisions

One of the key regulatory changes in 2026 is the full application of the EU eFTI regulation (Electronic Freight Transport Information), which introduces compulsory digital documentation in cross-border transport.

This means that paper documents become a thing of the past, and companies are required to use:

electronic CMR forms

For logistics operators, this represents a significant transformation of business processes, but also an increase in transparency and speed.

Regionalization of supply chains

Geopolitical tensions and the growth of global transport costs are accelerating the trend of the so-called nearshoring, i.e. bringing production and warehouse closer to the end markets.

Companies are increasingly developing multi-hub logistics networks, reducing dependence on distant suppliers, while Central Europe stands out in particular as an attractive area for the development of new distribution centers..

Control centers become operating systems

Modern logistics "control tower" systems no longer serve only for monitoring, but actively manage operations.

By integrating WMS, TMS, ERP systems and IoT sensors, these systems:

detect discrepancies in real time
automatically initiate corrective actions
optimize supply chains without human intervention

According to industry data, companies that use such systems record up to 27% shorter delivery times.

Green logistics becomes an obligation, not a choice

With regulatory frameworks such as the CSRD directive and the Fit for 55 package, the reduction of CO₂ emissions is becoming a legal obligation for logistics operations in the European Union.

This includes:

electrification of transport fleets
monitoring of emissions per shipment
development of energy-efficient logistics facilities

Green logistics thus moves from the domain of corporate responsibility to a regulatory condition of business.
