Wastewater treatment plant worth EUR 18 million opens in Subotica

A wastewater treatment plant, worth over EUR 18 million, was opened today in Subotica to put an end to the pollution of Palic Lake.

This plant was opened thanks to a EUR 9 million loan of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), EUR 5 million were donated by EU countries, the City of Subotica invested EUR 3 million, while the rest of the money was provided from donations, it was said at the opening ceremony.

Minister of Environment, Mining and Spatial Planning Oliver Dulic said that that plant would help Subotica come closer to European environmental standards.

He stressed that Serbia did not have resources to implement such important and big project by itself and thanked Europeans for co-funding the project through donations.

- We will continue to apply for grants for similar projects in other cities. The example of Subotica and this plant shows that Europe is a safe and reliable partner - said Dulic.

Vojvodina Prime Minister Bojan Pajtic pointed out that 70 sewerage networks or main sewers in the province were either under construction or already completed, adding that the project in Subotica was the biggest.

Subotica Mayor Sasa Vucinic announced that Palic Lake revitalization projects would be implemented in the future.
