21st Belgrade International Architecture Week from April 30 to May 30

This year, the 21st edition of the Belgrade International Architecture Week – BINA 2026 will be held from April 30 to May 30, organized by the Association of Belgrade Architects and the Belgrade Cultural Center.

The central theme of this year’s edition of BINA, “Architecture - Public Functions - Realizations,” presents projects that have contributed to social improvement and represent quality standards in the typology of public buildings and spaces through selected examples from practice. This theme draws on the experiences of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture “Mies van der Rohe,” which in recent years has focused on sustainable reconstruction, inclusivity and social impact, favoring the transformation of existing structures instead of new construction.

The central exhibition of the 21st BINA, “Radiance - Revealed Appearances,” will be installed in the Art Gallery of the Belgrade Cultural Center and will present recent, award-winning public buildings and entities. The curator of the exhibition is prof. Zoran Abadic, and the participants are Mihailo Timotijevic, Miroslava Petrovic Baludzic, Dejan Miljkovic, Jovan Mitrovic, Breda Bizjak (SLO), Riste Dobrijevic, Slobodan Radovanovic, Emil Jurcan (CRO), Srdjan Marlovic, Srdjan Tadic, Milan Mijalkovic, Darko Polic, Dinko Peracic and Miranda Veljacic (CRO), Vedran Jukic (CRO), Milan Djuric, Aleksandru Vuja. A special part of the exhibition is dedicated to reflecting on the presence and manner of presenting artworks in public space, and the exhibition will be accompanied by authors’ guided tours, lectures and discussions with domestic and international experts, award winners, representatives of the competition organizers and citizens.

In the Artget Gallery of the Belgrade Cultural Center, author Dunja Brkic will present part of the legacy of the photographer who dedicated a large part of his oeuvre to following the construction of New Belgrade in the period from the early 1950s to the late 1970s, through the exhibition “Unstable Landscapes - New Belgrade through the Lens of Raca Bulatovic.” “From the sand and swamp grow apartment blocks, the buildings of the Central Committee of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Federal Executive Council, the new Congress Center ‘Sava,’ the Hotel Jugoslavija, and the Faculty of Dramatic Arts. Objects such as the Hotel Jugoslavija and the Old Sava Bridge were frequent motifs in Bulatovic’s photographs, but today they no longer belong to the New Belgrade panorama, so the photographs remain as documents and memories of their former existence,” Dunja Brkic stated in the exhibition catalogue.

A special place in the BINA program is occupied by the exhibition “Unwinding Materiality” by the team of architects Davor Eres, Jelena Mitrovic and Igor Pantic, along with Sonja Krstic, Ivana Najdanovic (textile design) and Petar Lausevic (kinetics). Building on the exhibition project “Unfolding: New Spaces” presented at the 19th Venice Biennale in 2025, this exhibition continues to explore public space through issues of the relationship between materiality, ephemerality and collective action in architecture. The exhibition is being realized through a process of joint work by students from Belgrade, Vienna and Bratislava, and during the exhibition a series of workshops for children and young people will be organized, which will additionally contribute to the further development of the project. The exhibition and all accompanying programs will be realized in the BINA cabin space, a pavilion that was created 15 years ago as a result of a student workshop and has been a space for the work and presentation of young creatives for more than a decade. The international architectural exhibition “Piranesi Award 2025” presents a selection of fifty completed buildings built in the last two years and student projects, nominated by national and student selectors from eleven European countries (Austria, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Montenegro). The selector for Serbia is architect Andrej Strehovec.

The international biennial exhibition “Housing 25” presents innovative architectural solutions in the field of contemporary residential architecture on the world architectural scene for the sixth time. The exhibition is organized by the Department of Residential Buildings of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture at the University of Nis, headed by the initiator of the exhibition, Professor Aleksandar Kekovic.

Architectural walks are one of BINA’s favorite programs every year. This time, the BINA team is taking architecture fans on a walk “From Branko’s Bridge to Dorcol.” In the last few years, BINA has also organized excursions, and this year the destinations are the Coal Museum-Senj Mine and the Fortress on Hisar Hill. Thematic walks led by architects, art historians and artists are attracting great interest and attendance from the audience.

As part of the educational programs, the traditional seminar format “Architects, Designers, Practitioners” is being implemented, as a presentation of innovative solutions in construction, materials and equipment. Following this year’s BINA theme of public buildings, the seminar takes place at the Palace of Science, the first center dedicated to research and popularization of science in Serbia, which unites history and future through diverse content and activities and is the largest science center in the region.

The international program EU LINA 2.0 is dedicated to the theme “Urban Transition: Hopes and Fears.” In collaboration with selected LINA participants (Nami Gradoli Giner, Walaa Hajali, Lisa van Heyden and Enno Potschke), this program will present perspectives on the growing global turbulence, environmental risks and increased anxiety manifested in contemporary cities.

The student workshop “Objects on the River” presents works that build on the main theme of BINA through proposals for smaller interventions in the public space of Belgrade.

The two-day international program “Urban Laboratory” (Serbia – Switzerland) will take place through panel discussions and workshops with the participation of architects and panelists from both countries: Beat Aeberhard, Simon Hartmann, Simon Frommenwiler, Scott Lloyd, Milica Topalovic, Ivan Simic, Darko Sutanovac, Miljan Salata, Ana Mitic-Radulovic, Andjela Karabasevic and Jelena Bogosavljevic.

The international program Day of Oases of the “Urban Utopias / Belgrade Urban Oases” project deals with the transformation of neglected urban spaces with the aim of making them functional, sustainable and designed in accordance with the needs of the users of the local community.

BINA also presents the book “Regionalism in Serbian Modern Architecture” which shows representative examples of the lasting connection between contemporary architecture and heritage. The author is Igor Maric, who will speak about this topic with the participants and the audience.

The lecture “Les Cites Obscures,” by the versatile intellectual Benoit Peeters, will connect the world of architecture and comics.

The European Public Space Award is a biennial award organized by the Center for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona. Special attention at the panel discussion will be devoted to the evaluation process itself, the challenges faced by the multidisciplinary and multinational jury, as well as the presentation of this year’s candidates from Serbia. The importance of promotion and various forms of presenting and bringing architecture closer to the widest audience will be discussed by Agnieszka Rasmus-Zgorzelska, founder of the Center of Architecture Foundation from Warsaw.

During the BINA 2026 festival, the Association of Belgrade Architects award for the Architectural Event of the Year will be traditionally presented.
