Expansion of State Data Center Capacity to 200 MW Planned – Supercomputers as the Basis of Development

The state plans to expand the capacity of state data centers to 200 MW, with the goal of reaching up to 1 GW, along with the “parallel expansion of supercomputer capacities that represent the foundation of development,” said Mihailo Jovanovic, director of the Office for IT and eGovernment.

What we are proposing to the Government of Serbia within the program for 2030 and 2035 is a significant increase in investment in state infrastructure. We plan for the capacity of state data centers to reach about 200 MW by 2030, and about one gigawatt by 2035. This implies further expansion of capacities in Kragujevac, as well as the construction of new data centers, primarily in Nis and Novi Sad - said the director of the Office for IT and eGovernment.

Jovanovic emphasized that, according to the latest results, Serbia is among the top 20% of countries in the world most prepared for the application of artificial intelligence, and that the Office for IT and eGovernment is simultaneously working on several strategic tracks.

- One of the key directions is the expansion of AI infrastructure, but also its concrete application. I remind you that we installed the first supercomputer in 2022, and during April we will also put into operation a second supercomputer in the State Data Center in Kragujevac. At the same time, we are putting into operation two new blocks with a total capacity of 8 MW, thereby further expanding the data center’s capacities. In addition to infrastructure, the practical application of artificial intelligence is also of exceptional importance, which is why the Office for IT and eGovernment is already working extensively on various AI use cases, starting with assistants currently available on the eGovernment Portal and on the Portal for Foreigners. This assistant has also been implemented on the ‘Svoj na svome’ portal, which played a significant role in the process of registering property rights for citizens - said the director of the Office for IT and eGovernment.

He emphasized that by the end of March all employees of the Office for IT and eGovernment will complete training for the use of Microsoft Copilot and will be certified to use this tool in their daily work. This means that more than one hundred employees will have a certificate and will use Copilot in analyses and in all activities they perform.
