Another company in Serbia laying off workers – Aumovio reducing number of workers in Novi Sad

German automotive supplier Aumovio, which separated from the Continental automotive group, plans to lay off around 230 workers in Serbia, as part of broader cost-cutting measures that it will also apply in other markets, reports Bloomberg Adria.

The job cuts are planned at their Novi Sad plant, and the bulk of the process should be completed by the end of 2026. The layoffs will mainly be carried out within their research and development center, but the company claims that this will not affect the center’s continued operation.

Aumovio currently employs around 2,400 people in Serbia, which means that the measures apply to slightly less than 10% of the total number of employees in the local branch. Let us remind that the company is active in two locations in Novi Sad - it has a research and development center and a mega factory - where, as they emphasize, they combine engineering development and modern production.

The company’s goal is to reduce the share of research and development costs in total expenditure to below 10% by 2027, with the latest available data for the third quarter of 2025 standing at 11.9%.

The challenges in the automotive industry have also affected Serbia, where the sector has generally been growing strongly over the past 25 years, but parts of the industry have recently lost competitiveness. Cable harnesses were until recently a major export product, but are currently losing momentum as labor and other costs have risen sharply.

Several companies operating in Serbia have already announced layoffs in recent months, including Leoni and Draexlmaier.

The measures are estimated to affect up to 4,000 jobs globally, primarily at locations in India, Singapore, Romania, Serbia, Germany and Mexico. According to their website, the company employs more than 86,000 people in total.

Aumovi’s operations in Serbia include advanced engineering development and modern, high-precision manufacturing. The R&D center in Novi Sad works on a wide range of electronic and software-based technologies for passenger and commercial vehicles. This includes, among other things, dashboards, radar and camera systems, telematics control units, digital vehicle access solutions such as smartphone-based systems or remote keyless entry, body and zone management modules, trailer brake modules, child detection systems, e-mobility functions and a head-up display in the driver’s field of vision.

These cost-saving measures follow Aumovio’s separation from German auto parts manufacturer Continental last year to operate as an independent supplier in the areas of autonomous mobility, vehicle software solutions, advanced electronics, safety systems and user experience technologies.

Under the name Aumovio, the company began trading independently on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange on September 18 last year, Continental reminded.

When starting the new company, Aumovi shares were allocated to shareholders of the parent company Continental, so that for every two shares of Continental, their owners received one share of Aumovi.
