Serbian transporters end freight traffic blockades at borders – EU announces work on visa strategy

Serbian transporters ended the freight traffic blockades at border crossings, which had been in place since January 26, on January 30, 2026.

A statement issued by the Professional Association of International Road Transporters of Serbia states that the European Commission has announced that “professional drivers have been recognized as a special professional category that will be exempted from the limited period of stay in the Schengen area of 90 days in 180 days.”

The European Commission’s announcement also states that “the EU will work on a new visa strategy, because our drivers have been recognized as a group for which 90 days of stay is not enough,” the statement from the Professional Association of Transporters says.

For now, drivers have no information whether their colleagues from Bosnia and Herzegovina will also end the blockades.

Transporters from Montenegro and North Macedonia lifted the blockades the day before, satisfied with the fulfillment of their demands by domestic authorities and announcements from the EU about changes to the visa regime for highly mobile professions, among which they are.
