Kushner drops Trump hotel in Serbia - Affinity Partners withdraws from General Staff project

The prominent American newspaper writes that Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, has withdrawn from his investment venture in Serbia - the planned project to build a Trump hotel on the site of the General Staff building in Belgrade.
According to N1, this happened after the project sparked protests and after "a senior Serbian politician was indicted". As it is added, it brought an "abrupt end to the increasingly controversial project on which Kushner, now both a public figure and a mediator in negotiations, had worked for more than two years".
President Donald Trump's son-in-law, the newspaper reminds, has taken on a major geopolitical responsibility, volunteering to help lead US negotiations to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, after a similar role in Gaza.
At the same time, he runs Affinity Partners, a USD 4.8 billion private equity firm that invests globally and is largely funded by Middle Eastern governments. The firm is part of Electronic Arts' record USD 55 billion buyout and is helping finance Paramount's "hostile bid" for Warner Bros.
Removal of cultural heritage status and arrests
The crisis with the project in Serbia began when the administration of President Aleksandar Vucic tried to remove cultural heritage protection from the former General Staff military complex, which it intended to transfer to Kushner's company.
The prosecutor has initiated the process, arresting an official for alleged document falsification and launching a broader investigation. In response, the ruling party bypassed the investigation by adopting two quick measures in parliament (lex specialis), removing the protected status from the site and numerous other old buildings.
The Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office, by the way, has filed an indictment against the Minister of Culture Nikola Selaković and three other people in the General Staff case, namely the Secretary of the Ministry of Culture Slavica Jelaca, the Acting Director of the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments Goran Vasic, and the Acting Director of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Belgrade Aleksandar Ivanovic.
The indictments were filed in connection with illegalities in the removal of the status of cultural property from the buildings of the "General Staff", the prosecutor's office said in a statement. The suspects, as added in the statement, are charged with having committed two criminal offenses - abuse of official position under Art. 359, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code and forgery of an official document under Art. 357 paragraph 2 in connection with paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code.
Selakovic was questioned as a suspect at the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime on December 4, when he presented his defense. After the questioning, Selakovic made a series of accusations against the Office to the press.
