Supporting MK Group’s growth will contribute to the development of the agro-industrial sector and new capital investments of the company, which operates throughout the Adriatic region

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and MK Group, long-standing partners, signed a EUR 40 million sustainability-linked loan at the EBRD Consumer Rules Summit in Montenegro.

The agreement was signed by Jean-Marc Peterschmitt, Managing Director for the Corporate Sector at the EBRD, and Mihailo Jankovic, CEO of MK Group.

This marks an important milestone in the nearly two-decade-long cooperation, highlighting the importance of MK Group and the EBRD’s shared commitment to sustainable development.

The EBRD loan of EUR 40 million is the first loan related to MK Group’s sustainability and will facilitate the company’s diversification of its business.

Namely, MK Group will use the loan to invest in and open the Sunal alcohol factory, making Serbia an alcohol exporter for the first time in its history.

The state-of-the-art alcohol factory in Kovacica will produce food and medical alcohol, as well as bioethanol, and the factory’s capacity is 30 million liters of alcohol per year.

The loan will also be used to develop the wine business of the Erdevik winery, which operates within MK Group.

The cooperation between the EBRD and MK Group will bring environmental and digital improvements, with MK Group expecting to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2032 and enhance its cybersecurity and digital infrastructure through targeted technical support from the EBRD, all aimed at boosting sustainability, resilience and competitiveness.

MK Group is one of the leading companies in Southeast Europe, operating in Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, and Slovenia, with operations in food and agribusiness, tourism, real estate, and renewable energy industries.

The MK Group company has invested EUR 1.6 billion in its development in the first 40 years of business, and has announced a new investment cycle in the same amount and a new EUR 1.6 billion investment in future projects.

The EBRD is a leading institutional investor in Serbia and has invested more than EUR 10 billion through 390 projects, most of which have supported the private sector.

In Serbia, the EBRD’s priorities include enhancing private-sector competitiveness, productivity and access to finance.
