The British National Pig Association (NPA) has warned authorities about the growing problem of illegal pork imports.

The latest report by the parliamentary Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA) has revealed worrying amounts of meat and milk entering the country without any veterinary checks, writes Farmer.

The situation culminated in a bizarre incident at the port of Dover, where customs officers found a whole pig hidden in a suitcase during a check.

This case only confirmed the NPA’s claims that the current border control measures are insufficient and pose a serious risk to the health of livestock and the safety of domestic production.

Disease risk endangering farms

The association warns that the uncontrolled import of meat and dairy products can lead to the spread of dangerous animal diseases such as African swine fever or foot-and-mouth disease.

Such outbreaks could cause catastrophic economic losses, as they would threaten the entire food supply chain and damage exports.

According to the expert portal Agrarheute, the penalties so far have failed to stop smugglers.

Tougher penalties proposed

Public awareness of the risks of spreading animal diseases remains low, and many travelers are still unaware of the rules regarding which food products they are allowed to bring into the country.

The parliamentary committee has therefore asked the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to urgently present a plan to introduce tougher penalties, including immediate fines and the prosecution of repeat offenders.

The NPA stresses that this is a matter of national food security and that it is necessary to step up surveillance at all border crossings to prevent another crisis in the British livestock industry.
