Test operations begin at Kostolac Wind Farm

At the Kostolac Wind Farm complex, testing of the switchgear for this first wind farm of Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), with a capacity of 66 megawatts, has begun, EPS announced.

– The testing of this facility is being carried out by teams from the Elektromreza Srbije and is a necessary prerequisite for connection to the grid. The first power-up is expected at the end of September, followed by the power-up of the substation and electrical circuits. According to the dynamics of the works, this will be followed by the testing of the turbine, trial operation of each turbine and finally the complete Kostolac Wind Farm – says Predrag Djordjevic, Project Manager of the Kostolac Wind Farm.

This wind farm extends over the locations of Drmno, Petka, Cirikovac and Klenovnik and is specific in that the exhausted mining dump has been given a new purpose and has become a place for the production of green energy, with a significantly lower impact on the environment. The planned annual production of the Kostolac wind farm is 187 million kilowatt-hours per year, which is enough to supply green electricity to about 30,000 households.

The project is financed by a loan from the German development bank KfW in the amount of EUR 110 million, grants from the European Union, namely the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) amount to EUR 30 million, while part of the funds are provided by EPS. The construction of the Kostolac wind farm is a concrete step towards decarbonization and sustainable energy development not only of EPS, but of the entire Serbian energy sector, as well as increasing the share of electricity production from renewable energy sources.
