A group of European Parliament members, on behalf of the “Ne damo Jadar” association, has requested the European Commission to reveal who signed, on behalf of Serbia, the consent for Rio Tinto to apply for having the Jadar project pronounced strategic for the EU. The EC asked permissions from the Serbian government for that, but the government declined. According to the response to the European Parliament members, they were told in Belgrade that revealing that information would “undermine the protection of public interest regarding international relations and violate the privacy and integrity of the Government of the Republic of Serbia.”

In June, the European Commission included the “Jadar” project among the 13 new strategic projects related to critical raw materials. That means that the EU, if Serbia decides to implement the project, will give special benefits for “Jadar”, including assistance with its financing.

Nebojsa Petkovic of “Ne damo Jadar” says for Nova.rs that the members of the European Parliament who support the fight against Rio Tinto and the mining of lithium have requested the European Commission on their behalf to reveal the information about who, on behalf of Serbia, signed the consent for Rio Tinto to apply for having the Jadar project pronounced strategic for the EU.

– There is a group of European Parliament members who support our fight. Some of them visited Serbia in April. These are mostly representatives of the “greens” from various countries, not counting those from Germany – says Petkovic.
