Serbian Government Seeks to Take Over Plandiste Wind Farm Project from NIS

The Government of Serbia has expressed interest in taking over the development of the Plandiste Wind Farm project, currently jointly owned by the Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS) and Swiss-based MET Renewables. The announcement follows a recent meeting of NIS’s Board of Directors, during which a new Chairman and Vice Chairman were appointed.

- During the meeting, it was noted that the Serbian government is considering taking over the construction of the Plandiste Wind Farm, in partnership with Hungarian company MET, as part of its broader strategy to expand renewable energy capacity and support the country’s energy transition goals, the official statement reads. No further details were disclosed at this time.

Back in 2019, it was announced that MET Renewables and NIS had entered into a joint venture to develop the wind farm in Serbia, following MET’s acquisition of a 50% stake in the project from third parties. It was to be the first wind energy venture for both partners, and also the Swiss MET Group’s first renewable energy investment outside of the European Union.

MET Renewables AG—wholly owned by Switzerland’s MET Group—was officially registered as a shareholder in the project on March 19, 2019. The Plandiste Wind Farm was set up as a joint venture under the entity NIS-MET Energowind, with each company holding a 50% stake.

The wind farm, located in the municipality of Plandiste, will have an installed capacity of 102 MW and is expected to generate electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 85,000 households.

At the time of the announcement, construction was scheduled to begin in 2019, with full commercial operations expected by 2021.


As of July 2023, it was confirmed that turbine installation was scheduled for the second and third quarters of 2024, with the wind farm expected to become operational in early 2025.
