Construction of seven regional waste management centers throughout Serbia with EUR 300 million in loans from AFD and EBRD

The French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) are crediting seven regional centers for waste management in Serbia with EUR 300 million, whereby 47 local self-governments will solve the problem of unsanitary landfills.

The minister of environmental protection, Sara Pavkov, met today with representatives of AFD to discuss the dynamics and realization of the projects of the construction of the regional centers. The projects include the construction of sanitary landfills, facilities for mechanical and biological waste treatment, as well as infrastructure for the filtering of the seepage, treatment of biogas, recycling and composting. The aim is for the quantity of the disposed waste to be reduced to a minimum and to extend the life cycle of the landfills.

– For the first time, in Serbia we will be building facilities for mechanical and biological waste treatment as well, which points to a new phase and standards of the ecological policy. In that facility, recyclable materials will be separated to the greatest extent possible so that as little waste as possible would be disposed of at the sanitary landfill, whereby they will have a longer life cycle. The plan is also to build a facility for the filtering of the seepage, a facility for the collection and treatment of biogas, and to build or reconstruct transfer stations, recycling yards and composting facilities – said Pavkov.
