Serbia to meet prerequisites for connecting to EU energy market during summer

During the summer of this year, Serbia will meet the prerequisites for connecting to the European Union energy market, said Assistant Minister of Mining and Energy Jovana Joksimovic, as announced by the relevant ministry.

– Thanks to the amendments to the Energy Law, we have transposed the key provisions of the European Clean Energy Package into our legislation, while by adopting by-laws and EU directives during the summer of this year, we are meeting the prerequisites for connecting to the EU market, which was also recognized by the Energy Community Secretariat in its report by ranking Serbia as a leading country – said Joksimovic at the Energy Community forum on electricity in Athens.

Joksimovic stressed that Serbia had made great progress in implementing reforms in the electricity sector that aligned it with the legal trends of the European Union in that area. According to her, Serbia has had a functionally regulated “day-ahead” electricity market since 2017 and an “intraday” electricity market since 2023.

When asked about Serbia’s ambitions for reducing energy poverty, Joksimovic pointed out that the state planned to reduce energy poverty by 75% by the end of the decade compared to 2020, and that the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans and the Reform Agenda until 2027 provided for specific measures, including the adoption of an Action Plan that would address energy poverty reduction.
