Border crossing on tri-point between Serbia, Romania and Hungary traditionally opened

Organized by the Danube-Koros-Maros-Tisza (DKMT) Regional Cooperation, a traditional opening of the border crossing on the tri-point between Serbia, Hungary and Romania, at the meeting point of the borders in the settlements of Beba Veche, Kubekhaza and Rabe, has taken place.

The provincial secretary for regional development, interregional cooperation and local self-government, Aleksandar Sofic, who is the national coordinator of the DKMT Regional Cooperation, emphasized that the traditional meeting at the tri-point carried a strong symbolism, represented an act surpassing administrative and territorial frameworks and sent a message of trust, mutual respect and the building of a joint future based on cooperation, understanding and solidarity.

– The Provincial Government, the secretariat which I am heading and other institutions of our province actively take part in projects of cross-border cooperation with Romania and Hungary. Those projects are not just administrative documents and statistical data - they are real bridges between people, new possibilities for our communities and steps toward sustainable development and stronger connecting – said Sofic.

He reminded that, during the long-standing existence of the DKMT Euro-region, there had been numerous changes which had contributed to the region getting closer together and integrating.

– It used to be that, during the “DKMT Euro-Regional Cooperation Days”, temporary border crossings were set up so that we would enable meetings between citizens from all three states. The construction of the Kubekhaza-Rabe border crossing was a turning point, and the new stage was opened this year, with the entrance of Romania into the Schengen Area, whereby the borders were further erased – Sofic said and emphasized that the DKMT Euro-region was one of the best examples of how challenges could be overcome, innovative solutions developed and the quality of citizens’ lives improved by working together.

The ceremony was attended by the president of the Assembly of the AP Vojvodina, Balint Juhasz, the vice-president of the Provincial Government and the provincial secretary for education, regulations, administration and national minorities - national communities, Robert Otot, the chairman of the DKMT Regional Cooperation and the vice-president of the Bacs-Kiskun County Self-Government, Kornel Mak, and the president of the Timis County Council, Alfred-Robert Simonis.

Within the ceremony of the opening of the border crossing through the territories of these three states, the traditional cross-country race of students from the three surrounding villages was held at the tri-point.
