Serbian gaming industry achieves new record – Revenues in 2024 worth EUR 214 million

The Serbian Games Association (SGA) has published its latest report on the state of the local gaming industry in 2024, providing a detailed insight into how the ecosystem grew from 2017 onwards. While the global industry is still in the phase of crisis management that occurred after COVID, it turned out that the situation in Serbia is perhaps better than the global average.

According to the report, games created in Serbia (too) have been downloaded on platforms almost 300 million times.

The largest 15 companies generated an income of 214 million euros, which is 22% more than in 2023. It is estimated that around 100 studios and teams were operating last year, and 84 games are currently in development.

The industry employs around 4,500 professionals, with 200 new jobs compared to 2022. However, for 2025, the plan is to create only 130 new jobs, which is indicative of a slowing down of the growth and entering the stabilization phase.

The report also brings new insights: 31% of all employees are women, and they lead a third of all teams, whereas 55% of studios and teams develop original IPs. Mobile games once again lead the way in terms of total revenue.

For the first time, the data on the use of artificial intelligence in game development, satisfaction with project success, localization languages, company ownership structures, as well as the most visited local and foreign gaming events, were gathered.

Belgrade and Novi Sad remain the main development centers, and the most represented professions are in the fields of QA, programming and 3D art. It is the most difficult to find experienced programmers and seniors for business support job positions.

As key challenges for the further development of the industry, the companies emphasize high tax burdens, a lack of local support for game publishing platforms, as well as a lack of adequate tax exemptions.
