Innovative Eco-board project preserves nature and brings savings - Podgorica company 3D room makes sustainable furniture out of recycled plastic

According to the research of the International Union for Protection and Conservation of Nature, every citizen of Montenegro annually produces about 8 kg of plastic waste which ends up in the sea. Even more alarming is the fact that as much as 88% of marine litter originates from land. And, did you know that there is a company in Montenegro which not only removes plastic waste from nature,but recycles it and gives it a new life?

Thanks to the innovative Eco-board project, besides protecting the environment, they also reduce the cutting of trees, creating sustainable products that last for more than three decades. Thus, they save their customers money, and after that period, their products can be recycled and made new again. They are creators and innovators who do not only see plastic waste as a problem, but a valuable resource as well. They are - the 3D soba.

As Aleksandar Mašić from this company said in an interview with eKapija, the 3D room (3D soba) was born out of a personal passion for technology and creation, but also from the market`s need for affordable, fast and precise production solutions.

- We set off completely independently, without any institutional backing - from a garage and with one printer. Today, we are engaged in service 3D printing, sales of 3D printers and filaments, we conduct modeling courses and develop our own products, among which the most important project is the Eco-board - said Mašić for our portal.

According to him, the Eco-board project was created in the desire to give plastic a second chance and that instead of ending up in the nature and landfills, it becomes a durable, useful product.

- We have combined 3D technology, recycling and social responsibility into one specific process - we make benches, tables, waste baskets and other elements of the plastic waste collected and recycled in Montenegro. The aim of the project is to show that sustainable production is possible without large systems, and that local waste can become a local resource - our interlocutor says.

And how are eco-boards made? Mašić states that the production process was designed in-house and developed gradually.

- The production process is fully adapted to local plastic waste recycling and is based on mechanical treatment without chemical additives. The used material is HDPE and PP plastic which is transformed in several steps into a stable, durable and technically usable product - he explains.

According to him, the daily production capacity is about 60 meters of board, with the possibility of extending it to 120 meters, depending on the workload and organization of shifts.

- So far, we have delivered several hundred finished products - benches, tables, chairs, waste baskets, railings and other elements, and the material itself – the eco-board – can also be used as a raw material for all kinds of outdoor furniture - says Mašić.

And why products made of eco-board and not wood? We have already mentioned the environmental protection moment and the impact on reducing tree cutting. Our interlocutor enumerates some other benefits of using these products.

- Unlike wooden products, our products do not rot, they don`t absorb moisture, they don`t require any maintenance, and they last more than 30 years. Also, their price is significantly more favorable - Mašić says.

If we take all this into consideration, in addition to the fact that wood products can last for a maximum of 10 years, and that with regular maintenance which also costs, 3D room clients investing in this type of furniture can save up to 30%.

That is why it is not surprising that there is a great interest in these products.

- Particularly among municipalities and schools which until now were forced to frequently change wooden furniture. Our products offer them a lasting solution with ecological and social benefits.

And what is the significance of everything they do in the 3D room is also shown by the fact that they have recycled dozens of tons of plastic so far. Raw materials, Alexander tells us, they are obtained in cooperation with the company Deponija Podgrica and the recycling yard Lovanja.

- We currently have no problem with procurement because, unfortunately, local waste is more than enough. Citizens often write to us asking if they can bring plastic and - even though we have allowed it on several occasions, systemically we are not yet open to individual collections, but we plan to develop it in the future - he says.

When you hear about such a project, which stands out as a positive example throughout the region, so he was recognized by the Council for Regional Cooperation, you`d think that the state would have already recognized its importance and helped to further develop it. Unfortunately, the reality is completely different.

- We did everything exclusively from personal resources, without a single euro of state aid, international donors or funds. The biggest challenge was - and remains - balancing between production and market recognition. Even though more and more institutions know and value us, system support is not available yet. We owe our success solely to commitment, quality and a great will to create something useful - Mašić says.

Products made from eco-board are currently sold only in Montenegro, however there is interest from the region, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

- Customers find us via the website, social networks and recommendations. We are ready to enter the regional market and open to collaboration with distributors or designers who want to include us in their plans - our interlocutor says.

Talking about the plans for the next period, he says their goal is to expand their capabilities, increase the number of employees, include more cities and institutions, and to develop new products and lines.

- We are open to partners, collaborations and investors who share our values - to solve local problems locally, and in a sustainable way. If we can continue it independently, it will be great – but we believe that the right synergies can accelerate and amplify the impact of what we do - concluded Aleksandar Mašić in the interview for eKapija.
