Biography of Mark Brnovich
Mark Brnovich is an American lawyer and politician, best known for his position as the Attorney General of the US federal state of Arizona, which he held from 2015 to 2023.
He was born in 1971 in Detroit in a family of Serbian origin. His mother is from Split, and his father is from Montenegro. His parents emigrated from the former Yugoslavia to escape communism, and Brnovich often emphasized his Serbian heritage and Orthodox faith.
He spent his childhood in Phoenix where he graduated from high school. He graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor's degree in political science and then earned a law degree from San Diego State University.
Brnovich started his career as a prosecutor in the District Attorney's Office, and then worked as a legal advisor in several federal agencies, including the US Department of Justice. He also served as director of the Arizona Division of Gaming. During his work in public institutions, he gained experience in the fight against corruption, human trafficking and illegal gambling.
He was elected to the position of Attorney General of Arizona in 2014 as a Republican candidate and was re-elected in 2018. During his tenure, he was known for his criticism of the federal authorities, particularly in the areas of immigration policy, gun rights, and federal regulation. He launched a series of lawsuits against federal institutions and stood out as one of the most conservative US attorneys general.
In 2022, he ran for US Senator from Arizona, but failed to win the Republican nomination.
Brnovich was frequently present in the American media because of his specific political approach – a combination of legal formalism, conservative values and occasional distancing from the political establishment. He is well known in the Serbian diaspora in the USA, where many see him as a successful example of integration and political involvement of the descendants of Serbian immigrants.
Mark Brnovich is married and the father of two children. He is also known for his interest in history, sports and legal issues in the field of constitutional law.
Trump said of the new US ambassador to Serbia that he is "a proud veteran of the National Guard, and previously served as the state attorney general in Arizona."
- As a son of refugees from communism,
Mark will be a strong defender of liberty and will always put America first
- the US President added.
