Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) has commenced an evaluation of the feasibility and rationale for utilizing hydrogen production and storage facilities within its production capacities. This analysis will reveal our potential and outline how we can begin incorporating hydrogen to meet our needs, stated Dušan Živković, General Manager of Elektroprivreda Srbije.

He emphasized the need to identify potential sites, determine the scale, and establish the methods for utilizing the plant. The objectives include energy storage, diversification of storage options, reducing fossil fuel consumption for energy production, enhancing overall energy efficiency, integrating variable renewable energy sources (RES), and optimizing the EPS energy balance.

- We have long discussed the utilization of hydrogen within Serbia's energy sector and the wider region. We emphasize that the introduction of hydrogen technologies presents both challenges and opportunities in the decarbonization process. The energy transition and decarbonization are not merely pertinent to the energy sector but extend to the entire economy and society. Elektroprivreda Srbije is well-positioned and eager to lead this transformation, and I am confident it can steer Serbia towards a new hydrogen future. Over the next 10 to 15 years, hydrogen can carve out its place in our future - Živković said at the "Green Hydrogen as a Roadmap for Energy Transition" conference.

He further noted that during this period of energy transition, it is vital to secure Serbia's energy security and long-term stability. As the largest regional company, EPS will play a significant role in ensuring the energy security of the entire region.

- The future holds this promise. The aim is to achieve long-term energy security while maintaining the company's profitability, which is why EPS is advancing strategic projects such as PSHPP Bistrica and 1 GW of solar energy - he said.
