“Karadjordje” to be demolished, announced reconstruction abandoned – Novi Sad to get new stadium in line with highest UEFA standards

For nearly three years, there has been talk in the media about the reconstruction of the biggest stadium in Novi Sad. At the end of 2023, eKapija too presented what this stadium was supposed to look like after the reconstruction, then tender for said reconstruction was opened in March 2023, and the estimated value of the works was around RSD 120 million. However, aside from the replaced field, the announced reconstruction has not yet happened. Now, as the Gradske info portal has learned, the plan is to demolish the 100-year-old “Karadjordje” and build a new stadium in line with the highest UEFA standards in Novi Sad!



According to this portal, if those in charge approve the demolition of Karadjordje, the beginning of the construction of a new sports facility in Dimitrija Tucovica Street is planned for the end of May or the beginning of June this year, once the football season ends. During the works, which should last around 15 months, the Vojvodina football players will play their matches at the City Stadium in Zrenjanin, also known as “Karadjordjev park”, currently the host of the Proleter football club from Zrenjanin.

The final deadline for the completion of the works is the beginning of 2027, because, at the newly built stadium, in June of that year, the first match of the European Under-21 Championship will take place.

Since the “Karadjordje” stadium is owned by the City of Novi Sad, the city is to give the final world, considering that the project will be mostly financed from the city budget.

“Karadjordje” has been home to Vojvodina’s football players since 1924. The history of Serbia’s oldest first-leaguer has been written on its field and stands. However, for years now, it has not been meeting the UEFA requirements for the organization of European tournaments. It currently only meets the UEFA 2 standard, whereas the new stadium, once built, will meet the criteria for a category 4 license.
