Section of Danube Corridor 32 km long opened – Completion of construction of expressway announced for end-year

The section of the new expressway Danube Corridor from the highway to Pozarevac and from Veliko Gradiste to Golubac, 32 kilometers long, has been opened to traffic.

These are 21 kilometers on the first section from the bridge on the river Jezava (on the second kilometer from the toll station Pozarevac) to the end of the bypass route around Pozarevac, as well as 10.85 km on the third section from the beginning of the bypass route around Veliko Gradiste to Ponikve, which amounts to a total of 31.85 kilometers of the expressway.

The total length of that expressway is 67.94 kilometers, and now that it is opened to traffic, the construction of the remaining parts of the route is to continue.

On that traffic route, 62 structures are to be built, of which 22 have been completed, as well as six interchanges, of which three are completed, and the two existing ones are being reconstructed, whereas one is under construction, and the plan is for there to also be 16 roundabouts, of which nine have already been completed.

At the opening ceremony, the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, announced that the entire Danube Corridor would be opened in February or March of the next year at the latest.

– Today we are opening 32 km, and another 36 km remain, which we will complete, according to the promise of people from the company Shandong, by the end of this year – said Vucic.

Let us remind that, when the construction of the Danube Corridor began, it was pointed out that the first section of a total of three would be completed by the end of 2023, and the entire corridor by November 2024.

During the summer of 2024, the prime minister of Serbia, Milos Vucevic, nevertheless announced a new deadline for the completion of this traffic route – September 2025.

By the way, toward the end of last year, the state administration also announced the opening to traffic of certain sections of this corridor, but round around that time, the news arrived that one of the overpasses on the expressway Pozarevac-Veliko Gradiste-Golubac had collapsed.

However, several days later, the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Veliko Gradiste confirmed that there had been no collapse or demolition of any facility, bridge, or overpass on the construction site of the expressway section Pozarevac-Veliko Gradiste-Golubac, in the settlement of Djurakovo-Popovac, as the media reported.

The construction of this expressway, around 67 kilometers long in total, began in November 2021, and more than EUR 330 million will be invested. The contractor is the Chinese Shandong Hi Speed Group, and the subcontractors are from Serbia.
