The Belgrade public transport company GSP Beograd has announced that a public procurement will be opened for the purchase of another 100 new trams, after the previous 25 ordered from Turkey’s Bozankaya.

– Together with the 25 trams for which the purchase contract was previously signed, and the delivery of the first lot of which is expected soon, this will also represent the renewal of the tram rolling stock after the procurement of another 100 trams is carried out – GSP stated, as reported by Beoinfo.

According to the city transport company, this purchase represents the largest purchase of trams in the history of Belgrade, and after last week this company announced the purchase of another 300 new gas-powered buses (130 articulated and 170 solo buses).

Let us remind that the last completely new trams for the needs of Belgrade’s public transport arrived in Belgrade a little less than 15 years ago, when 30 Spanish CAF trams were acquired. Since then, until last year, city leaders have repeatedly announced the purchase of new rail vehicles, but everything ended with those announcements. The first tender, for the purchase of 20 new trams, was announced at the end of 2023, but was soon stopped. The next one was announced in the spring of last year, and as soon as it was launched, some experts and the GSP trade union pointed out that this tender was “tailored” for the Turkish Bozankaya.

This tender procedure, before Bozankaya finally won it, will be remembered for stoppages and requests for the protection of rights, as well as for numerous objections from potential bidders. GSP Beograd awarded the contract to Bozankaya in the summer, and the total value of the purchase was slightly more than 7.8 billion dinars, i.e. EUR 67.3 million without the VAT, or about EUR 81 million when the VAT is included. That is EUR 3.23 million per vehicle. Like everything else about this tender, the high price per vehicle was controversial.

As previously announced in the decision on awarding the contract, the deadline for delivery of the first lot of at least two vehicles is 12 months, and the deadline for delivery of the remaining vehicles is 13 months.
