A total of EUR 83.1 million has been secured for the realization of the project – EUR 67 million through an EBRD loan and an additional EUR 16.1 million from an EU investment grant through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF).
The proceeds will be used for the full replacement of the key equipment, including turbines, generators and hydromechanical components, which will enable the four HPPs within the system to work at full capacity.
– The investment project will focus on the replacement of the basic equipment: we will replace all the turbines, generators, the primary and secondary hydromechanical equipment. Once installed, this new equipment will secure the operations of the four hydro power plants at full capacity, without the currently frequently needed repairs. This will result in a much more balanced and stable electrical energy network and enable a slight increase of production capacities – stated the mechanical engineer at EPS Marko Filipovic.
The hydro power system Vlasina, built between 1946 and 1949, consists of four cascade power plants, which get water from the artificial lakes Vlasina and Lisina. This engineering endeavor, in whose construction over 150,000 workers took part, also encompasses a complex system of canals and tunnels nearly 60 kilometers long.
After this project, the reconstruction of the hydro power plants Bistrica, Potpec and Djerdap 2 and the facilities Uvac, Kokin Brod and Pirot is also planned.
