One step closer to continuation of construction of Vojvodina Smile – Two sections get green permits

The Provincial Secretariat for Urban Planning and Environmental Protection adopted at the very end of last year the decisions on the approval of the environmental impact assessment studies for another two sections of the Vojvodina Smile fast route.

These are the sections from the crossing with the connection to the industrial zone Kula to the administrative border with the municipality of Srbobran and from the administrative border with the municipality of Vrbas to the administrative border with the municipality of Becej.

It was determined that the project, carried by the PE Roads of Serbia, would not have a negative environmental impact.

This amounts to a green light for the continuation of the construction of the fast route from Backi Breg to Srpska Crnja, which started at the end of 2023 in Backi Breg.

The Vojvodina Smile fast route, with a length of around 185 kilometers, will connect the territories of Sombor, Kula, Vrbas, Srbobran, Becej, Novi Becej and Srpska Crnja.

The traffic route is designed for a speed of 100 km/h and will encompass 46 bridges, 35 overpasses, 5 underpasses and 35 culverts. In addition, the project also entails the construction of 12 interchanges and 13 surface-level roundabouts.

The first section of the Vojvodina Smile, from Backi Breg to Kljajicevo, should be completed by the end of 2026, as announced last summer by the now former construction and transport minister Goran Vesic.

He reminded that it had initially been planned for the route to go to Nakovo (Kikinda), a village on the very border between Serbia and Romania, but that, considering that an agreement had been reached with the Romanians for them to build their part of the road toward Srpska Crnja, the traffic route would go to Srpska Crnja, where a big border crossing would be built.

– This traffic route will be the fastest connection for the Romanian citizens who want to travel to western Europe, so it will be very busy and important for the development of our country – Vesic said at the time on TV Prva.

During last year, within the construction of the Vojvodina Smile traffic route, preparatory works were being done, which entailed the removal of tree stumps, the pouring of sand and four layers of rock, and the most recent piece of information dates back to August, when the mayor of Sombor, Antonio Ratkovic stated while visiting the construction site in Backi Breg that the route was being traced.

The City of Sombor announced at the time that, upon the completion of the preparatory works, the plan was to prepare for the paving, draining and the construction of the shoulders and the rainwater sewer, as well as that archaeological excavations were being done in several locations simultaneously and that the works on the construction of an overpass were to begin not long after.
