Vucic: I expect help from German experts in mining of lithium and other ores

The president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has stated that he expects help from German experts in the mining of lithium and other critical resources in Serbia.

– I was able to learn a lot today about the history of mining in Germany, but also the whole Europe. Back in the Middle Ages, Serbia cooperated with Saxony in mining. To me, it was also important what the experiences of Germany were about the knowledge that we could get from our German partners – Vucic said at the joint conference with the chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, in Freiberg, where they attended the presentation of the lithium excavation plan within the Zinwal lithium GmbH project.

He pointed out that, for Serbia, it was important how to use Germany’s experiences in the field of mining and advanced technologies, how to protect the living environment and the lives of people in the areas where the mine was to be opened.

– Of course, to also see what kinds of consequences it all brings, so that we can make sure that the processing itself is done in a completely harmless manner, as well as the issue of disposal sites and everything else – said Vucic.

Vucic said that he was glad that the German officials had also invited representatives of “anti-government media” to see their experiences with mining.

– I am especially happy that we have here with us today Petar Filipovic from Gornje Nedeljice, that is one of the people who came (to Loznica) to speak against the project, and today he had the opportunity to ask questions and get adequate answers. To us, the exchange of experiences, cooperation between are academies, is what’s important – said Vucic.

Representatives of Serbia and the EU signed, on July 19, in Belgrade, at the Summit on Critical Resources, the Memorandum of Understanding on the Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Raw Materials, Battery Production Supply Chains and Electric Vehicles, in the presence of Vucic and Scholz.

Protests by citizens of Serbia who oppose the exploitation of lithium, one of the critical (sustainable) raw materials, followed for months afterward.
