Difficulties with Open Balkan system at borders

The director of the Customs Administration of North Macedonia, Boban Nikolovski, has pointed out that the Open Balkan system “is functioning with difficulties” at border crossings.

– Both the transporters and the companies are completely right that there have to be improvements – Nikolovski told the press.


He announced that the Customs Administration of North Macedonia planned meetings with all the countries within that project and that it also planned to introduce technical improvements at border crossings in order to accelerate the procedures.

He said that at the gathering where the results of the 100 days of the operations of the Customs Administration of North Macedonia were presented.

He pointed out that, between July 1 and October 8, a total income of 35.4 billion denars (EUR 576.4 million) had been realized and that the amount was three billion denars (EUR 48.7 million), or 9.7%, higher than in the same period of the previous year.

The number of cases of confiscation in that period increased 60.2%, and the number of reports of criminal activities filed by the Customs Administration nearly tripled.

– Cooperation with the business community and inter-institutional cooperation, as well as international cooperation, have been upgraded – said Nikolovski.
