New limitations for prosumers in effect from today

New rules for producers-consumers of electrical energy apply from today, July 1, so households may apply for the prosumer status for rooftop power plants of 10.8 kW, and other prosumers, including the entire industry and other business entities, may apply for power plants of up to 150 kW. The transitory period which entailed limitations for prosumers for legal persons up to 5 MW stopped applying today, but all those who started the procedure in line with the old rules may complete the process and register in the prosumers registry, announced the Association RES Serbia.

The amendments to the Law on Energy will enable the status of an active purchaser for power plants of over 150 kW.

The number of electricity prosumers in Serbia is growing with each day – currently, the Prosumers Registry of Elektrodistribucija Srbije lists 3,222 prosumers with a total installed power of 55.3 MW. A positive trend of the growth of the number of prosumers in Serbia since the adoption of the Law on the Use of Renewable Energy Source in April 2021, which also introduced and defined the concept of a prosumer, has been noticeable.

There are 2,375 households in the prosumer category with a total installed power of 19.25 MW.

Most prosumers are households. The lowest number of prosumers is in the category of housing units – only three buildings (in Subotica, Pancevo and Nis) have opted for this form of electricity production, with an installed power of solar power plants of 69.5 kW.

Second on the list by number, but by far the first when it comes to the installed power, are prosumers in the category of Other Producers-Consumers. There are 844 of them with an installed power of close to 36 MW, of which 787 are legal persons, whereas 57 are natural persons. The biggest in this group and also the biggest prosumer in Serbia, is the company Toyo Tires from Indjija with an installed power of 7,5 MW.

The Association RES Serbia has analyzed the category Other Producers-Consumers. The analysis shows that the most numerous ones are telecommunications structures, of which there are 331 with an installed power of 3.6 MW, except that the majority of the installed power – 20.3 MW pertains to 138 industrial facilities. It is also interesting that the category Other Producers-Consumers features 13 churches, nine schools and five kindergartens.

Let us remind that, in line with the Law on the Use of Renewable Energy Sources, a producer-consumer is defined as an end-purchaser who has connected their own facility for the production of electrical energy from renewable energy sources to the internal installations, whereby the produced electricity is used to supply own consumption, whereas the surplus produced electrical energy is delivered to the transfer system, distribution system, that is, the closed distribution system.

It is also important to emphasize that prosumers will be one of the topics at the conference “RES SERBIA 2024”, which will be held on September 23-24 in Vrdnik.
