Medical doctors and engineers from Nis design instrument which accelerates and improves efficiency of operating procedures – Negotiating with foreign companies about production

The construction of a surgical instrument which enables the shortening of the operating procedure and an increase in efficiency compared to the instruments currently used in operating rooms has been devised by a team of medical doctors and mechanical engineers from Nis. Their startup LigaSurg is the winner of the first Nis Launcher accelerator program, and they are already negotiating with several foreign companies about the production.

One of the team members, the abdominal surgeon Ilija Golubovic, says that the idea about this instrument came after years of doing operating procedures which took several hours.

– We have detected those parts of the interventions that could be improved with new or considerably improved products. Our instrument provides great possibilities in everyday operations which are done by general, abdominal and chest surgeons, as well as gynecologists, enabling a considerable shortening of the intervention, with a multiple increase in efficiency compared to the existing instruments which are currently used – explains Golubovic.

With the help of the Launcher accelerator program, which was started by the Science-Technology Park Nis, their startup got expert and financial help and developed an innovative idea with a business model.

– After the initial testing, we are preparing the documentation for the patent which will protect the product in the market. Negotiations with several foreign companies which produce and distribute instruments are ongoing – says Golubovic.

In addition to him, the LigaSurg startup consists of the radiology specialist Sonja Jankovic, the general surgery specialist and digestive surgery subspecialist Milan Radojkovic, who work at the University Clinical Center, and the mechanical engineers from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Dusan Stojiljkovic and Rajko Turudija.

Of the total of 123 teams that applied for the Launcher accelerator program, they first qualified for the second phase with another 65 startups which got the opportunity for education and mentorship. Finally, 17 of them competed for the awards and monetary prizes, and Liga Surg placed first.
