Is that dress made of silk? No, it's made of milk!

German fashion designer and microbiologist Anke Domaske combined her two passions, science and fashion, to create the milk-based clothing line Mademoiselle Chi Chi.

Domaske, who used to split her time between studying microbiology and designing, spent years developing the perfect formula for the milk-made dresses. The fabric’s production takes place in a factory where milk fibers are spun into protein threads. The designer describes the material’s feel as light and silk-like.

“Milk is underrated because people only view it as a food-stuff,” Domaske explains. “But you can make a lot more from it – milk is a wonderful, natural raw material.”

She hopes that milk can become a cotton alternative in the coming years, since it only takes an hour to produce and puts sour milk to good use.

Madamoiselle Chichi has been an active label since 2003 and counts Mischa Barton as a fan.

Domaske is in the process of designing a men’s line for the brand as well.

Selling for between €150 and €200 per item, Domaske’s dairy designs are going on show this summer, and a similar line in men’s clothing is due shortly.
