A Big Jubilee Year for Mineral Wool Factory in Surdulica

Back in 1974, the first mineral wool factory opened in Serbia, in Surdulica. This year, the facility is celebrating its 50th anniversary and it is still the only one in Serbia to produce this kind of an insulation material. That is why the year 2024 will be in the sign of a big jubilee for Knauf Insulation, the owner of the factory since 2005.

Throughout the 50 years of its history, the organizational structure of the company has changed, the number of employees and the production portfolio have varied, but one thing has remained constant – and that is investing in the quality of mineral wool – a unique insulation material which simultaneously provides heating insulation, but also protection from fire and noise.

(The factory in the past) A sudden increase in the factory’s capacity and considerable investments in the equipment are recorded from 2005, since when the factory has been part of Knauf Group, a large international producer of construction materials. Since 2005, over EUR 50 million has been invested in the factory, and last year’s investment of 20 million is especially significant, because it was largely directed at increasing the sustainability of the operations and environmental protection.

Today, mineral wool is more current than ever, in the light of the energy crisis and the growing needs for the energy efficiency of buildings and the housing comfort. This insulation material from Surdulica is installed in all modern facilities in Serbia, but also in Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Greece and Albania.

This year, Knauf Insulation Serbia will organize a range of activities with which it will mark half a century of the production of mineral wool in Serbia.
