In Serbia, 71% Citizens Use Cash More Frequently Than Payment Cards

However, in six countries, over 50% of the subjects pay with cash more frequently than with cards. Among them is Serbia, where 78% of the subjects own a card, and as many as 71% use cash more frequently than payment cards.
More than 80% of the subjects have both debit and credit cards, and Austria is leading the way, with 93% of the populace having payment cards. However, in that country, more than 50% of the citizens prefer to pay in cash.
In addition to Austrians, this group also features Bulgarians, Serbs, Montenegrins, North Macedonians and Romanians.
The biggest percentage of citizens who prefer to pay in cash, compared to cards, is in Montenegro – 76%.
In these countries, there is a high number of subjects who use cash exclusively. In Serbia, 41% of those surveyed always pay in cash, whereas in Montenegro, they account for as much as 51%.
At the opposite end is the Czech Republic, where 69% of the subjects choose to pay with cards.
As many as 55% of the subjects in Central Europe said that they never used smart devices for contactless payments. In Serbia, 20% of those surveyed said that they always or sometimes used smart devices for contactless payments.
The highest presence of payments made using smart devices is in the Czech Republic, Poland and Romania, over 40%.
