The reconstruction and modernization of the Technical-Passenger Station Zemun (the main rail depot Zemun) has been going on for several years now, and if there are no additional obstacles, its modernization should be completed in the spring of next year. At this depot, Srbijavoz currently has immovable property and equipment worth around EUR 200 million.

With the arrival of 18 new trains of the Flirt brand and 5 fast trains from China, the value of that property will grow to EUR 400 million. That is why we consider the issue of the security of this facility to be very, very serious. In addition to the fact that we have lit the whole depot with 14 floodlight poles, on which we have numerous floodlights lighting the entire space, we have also installed video cameras on those poles, from which the entire depot is visible as on the palm on one’s hand – the acting director general of Srbijavoz, Ivan Bulajic, pointed out in a video clip on his Instagram account.

As he clarified, “these are video cameras of the latest generation, the best in the world, there’s nothing better than them.”

– The cameras can zoom in on a human face at 200 meters and recognize it. The resolution is truly incredible. We are thereby showing that we take the state’s support in the sense of investments in Srbijavoz very seriously and that we are acting like good hosts, not allowing those who draw graffiti or some more serious criminals to jeopardize what we have and what we want to use to have this company flourish in the coming years and decades – Bulajic said.

The modernization of the TPS Zemun started slightly over four years ago and should have been completed by November 2021. However, due to the coronavirus, the war in Ukraine, the increase in the prices of construction and other materials and equipment and supply problems, the deadline has been extended. As Bulajic recently pointed out in his interview with eKapija, around 85% of the physical works have been done so far. He added that, provided everything went as planned, the TPS Zemun could be fully completed by March or April 2024. On those 35 hectares, the main depot complex has 18 kilometers of the tracks which are used for the parking and maintenance of the trains when they are not operating the routes, devices for train diagnostics and a modern washing facility. At this complex, in the future, there will be three units for maintenance at which the maintenance of older and newer train generations, that is, locomotives and passenger rail cars, will be done separately. On top of all that, beginning with the next schedule, the trains will no longer depart from the Belgrade Center station, but from the TPS Zemun, where they will be maintained as well.

Let us remind that, when it comes to new trains, the first new Flirt-brand trains, of a total of 18, should be included in the traffic in the spring next year.
