European Commission sets obligation for energy companies to reduce electricity sales

The European Commission (EC) has adopted a new directive that sets an obligation for energy distributors or retail energy sales companies in the European Union to save 1.5% annually on their energy sales, said European Commissioner Günther Oettinger.

Such sales reduction can be achieved through the implementation of energy efficiency measures such as improving the efficiency of heating systems, installing double glazed windows or insulating roofs of final energy customers, EC recommended on Wednesday.

The Member States earlier set the objective to reduce the EU's anticipated energy consumption by 20% by 2020.

However, the EU will reach only half of its 20% energy efficiency target for 2020 if nothing changes in coming years, EC assessed.

Therefore, the commission has decided to adopt this directive, which should step up Member States' efforts to use energy more efficiently.
