Office for Information Security to be Founded

Serbia should soon get a new Law on Information Security and a better protection of the data of the citizens and the economy. Amendments to the law are necessary due to the new EU directive in this field, and the harmonization deadline is October 2024.

Jelena Micic of the National Alliance for Local and Economic Development says for RTS that the current law had been harmonized with EU directives, but that the Union changed the law in the meantime.

– The European Union has upgraded its regulatory framework in this field, so new directives have been adopted: NIS2 directive and the cyber security act. In the process of accession to the European Union, Serbia is obliged to follow those trends in the field of information security.

The new law envisages the founding of the Office for Information Security.

The Office for Information Security is being formed in line with the cyber security act, Micic says.

– It will unify the national CERT, which is currently in Ratel, and the CERT responsibilities for the authorities, which are now in the Office for IT. So, those responsibilities will now be unified. The Office for Information Security will also do coordination on the national level.

Two public discussions about the draft law are planned as well, in Belgrade, on August 18, and in Kragujevac, on August 21. Interested parties may attend and provide their comments to the draft.
