Check How Long It Takes AI to Crack Your Password

On the Home Security Heroes page, you can enter a password and get and estimate of how long it would take artificial intelligence to crack it. The estimate is based on data obtained through research. (NOTE: do not enter any of the passwords you actually use!)

Using AI, a team of researchers cracked passwords consisting of four to seven characters immediately or within several minutes, even when they featured a combination of numbers, upper- and lower-case letters and symbols. After they entered over 15.6 million passwords in the cracking program PassGAN, run by AI, they concluded that it was possible to crack 51% of the simple passwords within a minute.

However, the AI didn’t handle the longer passwords so well. A password consisting of 18 characters, all of them numbers, would take at least 10 months to crack, whereas a password of 18 characters with numbers, upper- and lower-case letters and symbols would take six quintillion years.

– AI algorithms are constantly A/B tested in millions of ways in order to stimulate learning. This AI predicts the most likely next number based on what it has learned. Instead of looking for knowledge on the outside, it relies on the patterns it has built in the course of its training – the research team said.

Some cyber security experts have expressed concern, whereas others believe that the current password generators are increasingly advanced and that AI stands absolutely no chance of cracking passwords which feature a larger number of random characters. Some see the solution in authentication without a password, such as fingerprint or face scanning.
