Alumil Uses Recycled “Green” Aluminum for All Its Architectural Systems

Alumil, a global, multinational company, has invested over 20 years in the recycling of aluminum, which it uses for the production of its systems, believing in the principles of sustainable development.

Aluminum operates in accordance with the circular economy and sustainability model. The main reason for this development is the fact that a sustainable approach to business is permanently set into the core activity of the company which defines corporate culture, strategy, and with that, the products it develops too.

Why is “green” aluminum important?

As a leader in the aluminum industry, Alumil understands its part of the responsibility for the environment and securing a sustainable future for the planet Earth. It therefore invests considerably in “green” aluminum, with the aim of reducing the energy footprint. It is a special metal which can be reused, retaining 100% of its mechanical properties. In addition to that, the production of “green aluminum” requires 95% less energy than the production of primary aluminum, which makes it a very acceptable product for the environment.

For over two decades, the company has been investing in the recycling of aluminum, and thanks to the foundry which was installed in 2014 with a photovoltaic panel unit, the emissions of carbon-dioxide have been reduced by 840 tons. At the same time, in the past two years, EUR 4.6 million has been invested in the forming of a unit for the sorting and processing of waste in the industrial zone in Kilkis. This investment is crucial, because it improves its ability to make products made of recycled aluminum.

“Green” products

Sustainability is built into the company’s DNA and clearly demonstrated by the certificates and decisions it secures. It is no coincidence that, for two years in a row, Alumil has been on the list of the leading companies in the field of sustainability in Greece of the QualityNet Foundation, whereas in 2021, it placed among the 35 rated companies which meet the ESG evaluation criteria, a framework which monitors companies’ performances when it comes to the issues of the environment and corporate responsibility.

Another “ally” of the company in this field are the so-called EPDs, Environmental Product Declarations, which the company has secured since 2017 for a multitude of architectural systems. The specific statements act as “identities” of products in the sense of their environmental impact.

Finally, a special place in the Alumil “green” advantage belongs to the recent acknowledgment that came with the international Cradle to Cradle Certified ® Silver certificate. In essence, Alumil has become the first Greek company for architectural aluminum systems that got this certificate, a global standard for safe and sustainable products created while honoring the environment.
