Contractor Sought for Second Phase of Reconstruction of Central Tower at Staro Sajmiste

The Staro Sajmiste Memorial Center has published the tender for the second phase of the works on the reconstruction, adaptation and repair of the facilities within the Staro Sajmiste Memorial Center: the central tower and the management building.

The tender is open until April 7.

The first works related to the measures of protection on the central tower structure began last summer.

The central tower now features 17 art studios with an area of around 675 m2. The studios are located in an annex, on the ground floor, the first floor and within the three levels at the foot of the tower. Two annexes have been adapted into apartments, and the fourth features the shared sanitary block. The building is accessed by two staircases located on the western and eastern sides.

According to the preliminary design, the reconstruction of the central tower entails the re-establishment of all four former entrances to the building.

Upon the removal of all the partition walls in the facility, the project of the reconstruction, repair and adaptation entails the forming of a space in the central part of the ground floor which can be used for an exhibition.

A space for the administration and a space of researchers, a classroom and a sanitary block are planned for the trapeze-shaped annexes of the ground floor.

The second phase of the reconstruction should last until the end of next year, when the building could open with the first exhibition.

The Staro Sajmiste location used to be a concentration camp run by the German occupation authorities, and also by the Independent State of Croatia toward the end of the war, where a large number of Serbs, Jews and the Roma people were killed.

The central tower is the first in a range of buildings of Stare Sajmiste to be reconstructed within the construction of the Memorial Center.
