The power plan in Alexandroupolis is being built by the joint company of three large energy groups from Greece – PPC, DEPA Commercial and Damco Energy from Copelouzos Group, announced Copelouzos Group.
The power plant will be directly connected to Gastrade’s Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU), which is under construction. This will turn Alexandroupolis into an energy hub for power and gas networks, with the potential to supply the local market and the markets of the neighboring countries in Southeast Europe, the press release says.
– The construction and the operations of Alexandroupolis power plant will also contribute to the meeting of the objectives of the European Green Deal and a shift to the production of energy with low emissions. The equipment which will be installed inside the facility is suitable for the combustion of hydrogen and can run on mixed fuel – says the press release.
The new power plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2025. It will feature a combined cycle and have an installed power of 840 MW, which is close to the net capacity of three lignite power plants which are currently being put out of operation. Thanks to its high efficiency, it will enable flawless power supply at low prices.
The CEO of Copelouzos Group, Christos Copelouzos, stated that “Greece is now protected, it is getting energy sufficiency, and at the same time, a new energy pillar is created for Southeast Europe, because the country will be able to export electricity to the neighboring Balkan states, to Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and even to Serbia”.
The CEO of DEPA Commercial, Ioannis Papadopoulos, said that Greece was thereby also getting a new hub for switching to green energy, because the power plant with a combined cycle would balance the system, enabling a greater penetration of RES into the energy mix.
