Jobs at cemeteries for 13,000 people - Info Spomenik invests EUR 70 million in maintenance of tombstones and security survey

Zrenjanin-based company Info Spomenik offers jobs involving maintenance of 76 cemeteries around Serbia for 13,000 people and gives a monthly salary of RSD 25,000. Only about ten citizens have so far applied for the job.

The company seeks people older than 50, the number of whom in Serbia is about 87,500.

The company`s officials are shocked because they expected to receive a large number of job applications since they seek unemployed people whom no employer in Serbia wants to hire. Together with several foreign investors, Info Spomenik plans to invest EUR 70 million in maintenance of tombstones and security survey of cemeteries.

Info Spomenik has offered jobs involving maintenance of tombstones and equipment for 13,000 people and jobs for 76 managers who would run the company`s branch offices in 76 municipalities in Serbia.

The nearly only condition for the former is that they must be literate, while the latter have to be at least secondary school graduates. Workers would be washing tombstones, maintaining greenery, cleaning snow, etc. Managers would be running the business and maintaining cameras at cemeteries for a salary of EUR 330.

Djurica Danikov Vorgic, an adviser to the Director of Info Spomenik, says that 17 unemployed people have been asking about the job over the last two weeks, while only 8 of them have sent applications.

- I do not blame people for not applying for the job because I believe that they don`t even know that these job openings exist. I am desperate because the state does not help me find workers - he says.

- I talked to the Ministry of Labor, they said they were not authorized. I spoke to the Ministry of Economy several times, they sent me to the National Employment Agency. People at the Agency told me I had to contact each of their services in all cities in Serbia if I wanted to hire people from all around Serbia. I have sent e-mails to 33 addresses. I am not asking for subsidies but workers and I need them urgently - Vorgic points out.

There are about 87,500 unemployed people older than 50 in Serbia , which is nearly 12% of the population, and most of them have lost their jobs at factories.
