Insured Deposits Reach EUR 25.3 Billion – Citizens’ Savings Most Represented

According to the data of the Deposit Insurance Agency, the total insured deposits in Serbia amounted to EUR 25.3 billion at the end of the third quarter this year.

That is more than three times as much as in 2008, when the guaranteed amount of savings in banks per deponent was increased to EUR 50,000, according to the agency’s website.

As added, the total funds on the accounts of citizens, entrepreneurs and micro, small and medium legal persons in the past 14 years have grown by 10% a year on average.

According to the agency’s data, two thirds of all insured deposits consist of citizens’ deposits.

– Although individually lower than the deposits of legal persons, as the most numerous ones in the total sum they represent a considerable and stable deposit base. The deposit insurance system covers a great majority of the natural person deponents (99%), since the total amount of the money they keep in a bank does not exceed EUR 50,000 – says the official website of the Deposit Insurance Agency.

As emphasized, even though citizens predominantly keep money in foreign currencies on bank accounts, for a number of years now, “due to the more attractive interest rates on dinar savings compared to FX savings, the favorable tax treatment and the preserved relative stability of the dinar to the euro, a considerable increase in the indicators of the dinarization of citizens’ deposits has been recorded”.
