A biomass-powered heating plant was officially put into operation yesterday in Novi Pazar, as announced on the website of the Government of Serbia.

The minister of mining and energy, Zorana Mihajlovic, stated that the newly built heating plant would mean more efficient heating 24 hours a days, cleaner air and savings for the town’s residents during that heating season.

While visiting the new heating plant, Mihajlovic said that the new heating plant would fully exclude mazut and use biomass as its main energy source and added that it was also important that losses on the heating pipelines had been reduced from 20-22% to less than 8%.

She pointed out that it was especially important that the residents would have heating 24 hours a day, that the there would be zero sulfur-dioxide emissions and 87% less carbon-dioxide emissions and added that the plan was for Novi Pazar to get another heating plant.

The value of the whole investment is EUR 6.5 million, and the project is realized together with the German Development Bank KfW and with Switzerland’s support.
