What did life in Belgrade look like, how did people work, enjoy themselves, mourn, when did the first tram start operating, when did the city get public lighting, which part of the town is the oldest, where was the first park located, who were the stars of our interwar music scene, what was the most expensive plot of land in the history in Belgrade?

Answers to these, but also other interesting questions from the history of the capital of Serbia, are provided by the exhibition “Once Upon a Time in Belgrade – In Front of and Behind the Curtain”, which will open on Friday, September 30, at 6 PM at King Peter’s House in Senjak.

The exhibition, which consists of select photographs of buildings, people and events, is the result of the dynamic virtual dialogue of the members of the Facebook group “Once Upon a Time in Belgrade”, which have been revealing family secrets illustrated by preserved photographs from old albums, peeking through the keyholes of ballrooms and over the fences into their neighbors’ yards for over a decade now.

The group publishes exclusively photographs made before 1941, that is, the start of the Second World War in these areas, but what started as a passion of a small group of fans of old Belgrade over a decade ago has since turned into socializing, sharing knowledge, ideas and content, with nearly 30,000 people taking part. This summer, the book titled “Once Upon a Time in Belgrade – In Front of and Behind the Curtain” was published, containing stories from the group, accompanied by numerous, mostly never before seen photographs from private collections and family albums. The publication of the book was followed by the exhibit, which strives to show, as much as possible, the precious contribution of the numerous enthusiasts gathered within the group, whose help in putting together the puzzle of the Belgrade history casts light on the life in Belgrade that no longer exists.

The exhibition is open until October 7.
