The 1st FIFA World Cup took place in Uruguay in 1930 and it had the lowest attendance of all FIFA world cups. The first-round match between Peru and Romania was watched by only 300 spectators!
The Kingdom of Yugoslavia had the youngest team at the World Cup. The average age of players at the match against Brazil in 1930 was 21 years and 258 days. The match between Uruguay and Yugoslavia had the largest attendance at the tournament. At the stadium Centenario, which can hold 100,000 spectators and was finished five days after the World Cup started, 93,000 people gathered to watch that match.
In the semi-final match between Uruguay and Yugoslavia, after being assisted by a local police officer who passed the ball from behind the goal, Anselmo scored and Uruguay took a 2-1 lead.
The now-traditional third place playoff was not established until 1934, so the 1930 World Cup is unique in having no match take place between the semi-finals and the final. Yugoslavia was placed third because of the semi-finals loss to the eventual champions, Uruguay.
France's Lucien Laurent was the scorer of the first World Cup goal. He scored that goal against Mexico on July 13, in the 19th minute of the match, at the stadium Pocitos. After the match with Brazil, the press in Uruguay gave a nickname to the national team of Yugoslavia, calling them IĆIĆI because most players' last names were ending in IĆ.
All matches took place in Montevideo. Three stadiums were used – Centenario, Pocitos and Parque Central.
