Planting of Ten Trees to Every 1,000 Newly Built Square Meters Mandatory in Kragujevac

From September 1, the planting of trees will be mandatory for those who build. For most investors from Kragujevac, profit comes first, so tree lanes have given way to concrete. Those who also consider the general good are rare.

– That decree or decision, whatever it is, is a great thing. It should have been done sooner. I have advocated this before, as there has been a certain number of trees on the parcels I’ve built. There’s also what we could save, regardless of it making the construction more difficult and complicated – points out Miroslav Brkovic, an investor from Kragujevac.

Last year alone, around 1,400 decisions on construction were issued in Kragujevac, due to which, those in charge estimate, the equivalent of an entire forest was cut down. Of the 200,000 hectares covered by the spatial plan of the city, only 12% are green areas.

That is not enough, the citizens estimate and support the decision to increase the percentage.

That is why the city made the decision. To each 1,000 newly built square meters, the investor will have to plant ten trees.

– In order to get all the permits, finally, in order for the building to get the exploitation permit, they must come with a certificate from our company Sumadija, which planted not just something, but a serious sapling of six, seven, eight years, whatever the clear criteria for it are – explains Nikola Dasic, the mayor of Kragujevac.

Kragujevac is the first city in Serbia to ban construction without planting within the campaign “Heal Nature, Plant a Tree”. The heart of Sumadija will try to justify its name in the future through green projects.
