Thessaloniki Port ready for greater cooperation with Serbia

Chairman of the Thessaloniki Port Managing Board Stilianos Angeludis stated today in Belgrade that goods from Serbia represented 5% of the annual turnover of that port.

He told Beta agency that Thessaloniki Port met all conditions for a greater cooperation with Serbia, but that Serbian companies were not familiar enough with the situation in that port.

- Thessaloniki Port may be the main port for Serbia. A cooperation exists, but it is on a very low level and amounts to only 5% of the port's total turnover - Angeludis pointed out.

As the port director explained, Serbia is now more using ports on the Adriatic coastline - Kopar, Rijeka and Bar. He also stressed that it was easier for the southern part of the country to establish a cooperation with the port in Thessaloniki because the infrastructure of the south of Serbia was also developing with the construction of Corridor 10.

According to his words, the capacity of the Thessaloniki Port is up to 8m tons of conventional cargo, while the port's current turnover of goods amounts to about 5m tons of such cargo.

- At this moment, about 300,000 containers are transported via Thessaloniki Port, while its capacity is 1m such containers - he added.

Angeludis announced that the new management of Thessaloniki Port had started implementing the project of its expansion by building a new large dock that would enable large ships to approach the port container terminal.

He added that another cargo terminal was under construction within the port, which should enable linking of loading and unloading of goods with their further transport.

- We had very efficient talks with Serbian representatives today and set some very good basis for the extension of our cooperation - Angeludis underlined.
